This week, during one of my fitness walks through town, I found myself tumbling onto the concrete. My right foot turned slightly inward, and that’s when my body met the pavement.
“I cannot believe this is happening!” I shouted in my head, wondering if I’d get up and keep going or call on my cell phone for medical attention.
There are no broken bones or soreness, but I do have a well-bruised and cut lower arm to remember the spill.
Best of all, I immediately rose from the pavement and after checking my condition continued the walk.
This is the same way we marketers react when a problem occurs with one of our projects. Whether the glitch happens publicly or privately, there’s no time to wallow or sulk. You review the situation and quickly begin anew. There’s simply no time to lose to keep your marketing on track.
Sure, my ego was bruised a bit. Tumbling in public is a bit humbling, but as with large corporations that experience huge recalls and lawsuits (thankfully, our problems aren’t that extensive!), you find a way to bounce back so the incident is a distant memory.
If your marketing is stuck due to a problem with your last campaign, remember what I did when I fell. Get up, shake it off, and continue the project. Just make sure you pick up your feet during each stage.

Been there, done that… Totally humiliating, until you realize no one thought it was as embarrassing as you.
Hi Shirley – I’m so sorry that you had a fall (I’ve had it happen too and it’s not fun obviously), but I love that you tied it into how it’s similar to our marketing efforts. We definitely need to remember to get back up, shake ourselves off, and move on. You are so inspiring!

This a great article. In my daily conversations with business owners regarding their marketing, I find that a bigger problem is that so many business owners fail to admit to them selves that their business marketing efforts need some sort of optimization. How do you explain to someone that they can do so much more at a reasonable cost with online marketing?
I get through to more and more people everday.
